THOUGHTFUL DESIGN
The science behind diatomite: fossil algae that drink water
Diatomite isn't a synthetic foam or a coated fabric — it's a 30-million-year-old sedimentary rock formed from the fossilized skeletons of microscopic algae called diatoms. Each diatom skeleton is a silica honeycomb full of nanometre-scale pores, and a single gram of diatomite contains over 600 m² of internal surface area — roughly the area of two tennis courts packed into a teaspoon.
WHY IT WORKS:
- Capillary action — nanopores draw water away from your feet through physics, not soaking
- 3-second drying time — water instantly spreads across thousands of micro-channels
- Naturally antimicrobial — the alkaline silica surface inhibits the growth of bacteria and mould
- No fibres to trap moisture — nothing for mould or odours to cling to
- Reusable for years — a little sun-drying once a month restores full absorbency
That's why hot-spring resorts in Japan have relied on diatomite floors for over a century — and why we designed ours to fold flat for any modern bathroom.
